Phalaenopsis
Indoor Growing Cultural Requirements

If there were an orchid that you would nominate as the "best to grow indoors", which genus would come to mind?  It is very likely that most of us would suggest a Phalaenopsis.  With some reasonable attention to cultural needs, Phals have become a very popular addition to most indoor grower collections.  With the wide array of colors (yellow, red, orange, white, pink) and patterns (horizontal and vertical streaks, large and small spots) it is not surprising that this genus of orchids has become a favorite among both amateur and advanced growers.

If you have ever had difficulty in bringing your favorite Phal to bloom and have wondered if you were unaware of those several "tricks" that help promote good plant health and blossom development, you may want to attend our upcoming May meeting.  We are fortunate to have Helen Michel visit with us and share her expertise on indoor growing of Phalaenopsis.  Helen and her husband, Maynard, are the owners of the Phalaenopsis House, Orchids Orinda, located at the Orchid Ranch in Livermore, California.  Helen is an A.O.S. Judge and chairperson of the Pacific Central Judging Center, a retired Chemist from Berkeley and a full time devotee to her customers and those interested in improving their cultural knowledge and growing skills.
